Question:
I will be graduating from college in May 2009. I will have my bachelors degree in Communication with a mass media focus and concentrations/ minors in Public Relations and Business. As far as a career goes I am wide open! I want to do everything! I love planning problem solving working with people and developing ideas. My biggest passion in life is traveling! I am from the US and have only been around this whole country and Canada and I need out! I wish I could have done study abroad at my school but it is too expensive and too late now as I only need 19 more credits that are not available on study abroad. ANYWAY NOW I am freaking out because I do not want a job right away! I dont want to be nailed to a desk with 10 days vacation and stuck in the US for the rest of my life! I want to travel the world! I JUST DON'T KNOW HOW! Ideally I would love a career that would allow me to travel everywhere and maybe live a few months and maybe consult and develop new locations hard 2 find though
Answer:
"Join the Army they said see the world they said I'd rather sailing"
International Business or Relations might have been a good start. You should have worked harder to save money while in college. I plan on doing the same thing however I have been working hard to save money. I should have about 50k to travel with when I am ready.
Anything? The peace corps is a good start and they give lots of vacation time. Also as said in the quote above you can travel in the military they also give lots of time off. If you get stationed in Germany then you hit the jack pot. You could Italy or France or lots of others on a whim during a long weekend.
I agree touring a country is not nearly as fun being there with a real purpose. I lived in Korea for 2 years in the military as a linguist and I met lots of people from Canada and the U.S. who taught Englsih. You could try that. My friend just took off for Japan to teach English.

I can help you with your question. First off I have worked with plenty of college students just like yourself.
I worked as a College Recruiter for one this nation's largest banks--J. P. Morgan Chase Bank. I have read plenty of resume's cover letters & references.
You're in a very good position since you won't be graduating until next May. You have plenty of time to make plans. Make sure you check with your Career Placement Office at your university. I know almost all business schools have their own Career Placement Offices but their are also Career Placement Offices for the entire student body. Your Communications dept. may have one of their own. If not since you have a "minor" in business you cn probably register your resume' with the school of business.
Make an appt. at your Career Placement with one of the counselors & tell them your entire plan. Also they have plenty of interships & you may find one to take during your last yr. in school. You can get college credit & work experience at the same time with an internship. You may find just what you're looking for as far as taking a yr. off of school traveling or both.
Some schools have degrees in Hospitality & Tourism. See what your school has. If they have some degree like this; it will either be in the College of Agriculture or the School of Business. Agriculture includes Food & Nutrtion degrees & sometimes the Hospitality & Tourism are found in this dept.
I know I owned my own travel agency yrs. ago & I was a guest lecturerer in a Tourism course at my university where I did an internship.
You should check with travel agencies for a career since you want to travel. They should help you with this at your Career Placement Office. Make sure you have a resume that includes all these desires that you mentioned here. I would also suggest writing a cover letter for your resume' & also make sure you have at least three references. If you have some excellent grades in a few of your coureses than list these instructors for references. Remember if you get a good grade in a course; the instructor will have positive things to say about you or they wouldn't have given you a good grade.
Also if you know you had a former boss or supervisor that would give you a good recommendation than list them as a reference. Only list a reference that you know will be totally positive for you. Also make sure that your entire resume' lists aonly positive things about yourself. If there's anything negative about your past then just leave it out & never mention it.
If you have extracurricular activities that you were or are involved in at your college then list everyone of them at the bottom of your resume'. Also if you have done any volunteer work then list that in the same area. Volunteer work & extracurricular activities such as a university club or organization are considered exceptional since they aren't required & are extra work.
Communications is an excellent major & I know this can include journalism Radio/T.V. & Advertising.
I would suggest that you combine your desire to travel with your professional career. You would definitely be an excellent travel agent. I have booked Caribbean Cruises as a travel agent & I know these cruise lines have plenty of positions available all the time that require you to travel aboard the ship. They also ahve positions as for tour guides where you take the group on tour & you can enjoy the trip yourself.
Check with Royal Caribbean & Carnival Cruise Lines. They are to two largest in the world & they have cruises to every city & country that you said you'd like to visit. Also Check Disney Cruises--they have an excellent reputation for family & children who enjoy cruises & they are owned by Walt Disney Productions; the same corp. that owns Disneyland & Disneyworld.
One final thing; check out companies that will hire you after taking a yr. off of school. There are a lot of schools & businesses that recommend time off after you graduate & before you start your career. You can always list your starting date for work for a whole yr. after graduating.
Finally if the Cruise Line companies don't interest you for travel than do some research on other travel agencies. If you search the web you can find them all listed. If you know the internet then check yahoo. They let you post your resume' for free & it works.
